If you were walking or driving along Ayala avenue last Thursday and heard a car, stuck behind a couple of buses, honking (without lifting) for a good 30 seconds or so, that was me.
The annoying sound attracted attention and pissed off some bystanders and one bus conductor. Funny thing was, instead of directing their annoyance to the buses who were blocking the way for more than 10 minutes, using two lanes and taking their time to load people in the middle of the street, it was me who received all of it. Some people who were crossing the street to board the bus were staring at me and I even heard a bystander shouting cuss words.
Yes, the honking got some people annoyed, but the sad thing was most of them didn’t really care, as long as they were not inconvenienced. They’ll just look and then carry on their own ways. The taxi driver beside me was too busy listening to his radio. The bus drivers didn’t even move an inch and I was stuck for another 5 minutes.
Has it become normal for us Filipinos to have our buses and jeepneys block the road just to get passengers? Have we no sense of order and respect for time? Do we even really want to be a first world country?
I’m not sorry for what I did. I’m sure there are people who are enraged too but lacked the courage to show it. I want change and I want to provoke people who wants the same and that’s why I honked and will keep on honking for 30 seconds or more.
